Simultaneous HST/ASCA Observations of LMC X-4: X-ray Ionization Effects on a Stellar Wind
نویسنده
چکیده
We present first results from simultaneous ultraviolet (HST/GHRS) and X-ray (ASCA) observations of the 13.5s pulsar LMC X-4 taken in 1996 May. The ASCA observations covered 1.12 binary orbits (1.58 days) and the HST observations were centered on this for roughly 0.4 orbital phase coverage (0.56 days). The GHRS data are the highest resolution (both temporal and spectral) ultraviolet spectra ever taken of LMC X-4. A Good Long Look at the Black Hole Candidates LMC X-1 and LMC X-3
LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 are the only known persistent stellar-mass black hole candidates that have almost always shown spectra that are dominated by a soft, thermal component. We present here results from 170ksec long Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of these objects, taken in 1996 December, where their spectra can be described by a disc black body plus an additional soft (Γ ∼ 2.8) h...
متن کاملX-Ray/Gamma-Ray Observations of the PSR B1259−63/SS 2883 system near Apastron
We report the results from X-ray and hard X-ray observations of the PSR B1259−63/SS 2883 system with the ASCA and CGRO satellites, performed between 1995 February and 1996 January when the pulsar was near apastron. The system was clearly detected in each of the two ASCA observations with luminosity in the 1–10 keV band of LX = (9 ± 3) × 10 32 (d/2 kpc) erg s, while CGRO/OSSE did not detect sign...
متن کاملNonthermal X-ray Emission from the Shell-type Snr G347.3−0.5
Recent ASCA observations of G347.3−0.5, an SNR discovered in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, reveal nonthermal emission from a region along the northwestern shell (Koyama et al. 1997). Here we report on new pointed ASCA observations of G347.3−.5 which confirm this result for all the bright shell regions and also reveal similar emission, although with slightly different spectral properties, from the r...
متن کاملThe X-Ray Spectrum and Global Structure of the Stellar Wind in Vela X-1
We present a quantitative analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the eclipsing high mass X-ray binary Vela X-1 (4U 0900 – 40) using archival data from the ASCA Solid-State Imaging Spectrometer. The observation covers a time interval centered on eclipse of the X-ray pulsar by the companion. The spectrum exhibits two distinct sets of discrete features: (1) recombination lines and radiative recombinati...
متن کاملXMM - Newton observations of the massive colliding wind binary and non - thermal radio emitter Cyg OB 2 # 8 A ( O 6 If + O 5 . 5 III ( f ) ) ?
We report on the results of four XMM-Newton observations separated by about ten days from each other of Cyg OB2 #8A (O6If + O5.5III(f)). This massive colliding wind binary is a very bright X-ray emitter – one of the first X-ray emitting O-stars discovered by the Einstein satellite –as well as a confirmed non-thermal radio emitter whose binarity was discovered quite recently. The X-ray spectrum ...
